Rigi

The Rigi is a world of its own and the panorama even had Goethe in raptures - the view sweeps over 13 lakes and a sea of peaks. The natural paradise between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz -  is deservedly known as the Queen of the Mountains.

History

The first travellers to Mount Rigi were bathers and pilgrims. Rigi Kaltbad has a bathing tradition dating back 600 years. From the Middle Ages onwards pilgrims have sought the healing power of the legendary "Spring of the Three Sisters".  At the turn of the 17th Century over 100 bathers visited Rigi Kaltbad every day. In 1815, the famous picture "Panorama of Mount Rigi" drawn by Heinrich Keller was published.  This picture inspired many people to visit the Rigi and enjoy the spectacular view for themselves. In 1816, Switzerland`s first mountain inn was opened on Rigi Kulm. Rigi porters transported the tourists up the mountain in sedan chairs  with the help of donkeys and horses. When the Vitznau-Rigi railway was opened in 1871,  the Rigi porters lost their livelihoods.

The Rigi has lost none of its appeal to this day. Located in the heart of Switzerland, it is now easily accessible from all directions and is served by mountain railways. The mountain has a well-signposted network of hiking trails and offers activities for all ages.
