Vitznau's Old School and Town Hall is a protected historic building that houses the regional museum of Lucerne's three Rigi municipalities Greppen, Vitznau and Weggis.
Exhibition
The exhibition introduces visitors to the country and its people, history, local customs and economic development. It provides a wealth of information about the Rigi as a mountain of herdsmen and pilgrims and about the construction and operation of the first cogwheel railway in Europe. You delve into the world of tourism during the late 19th century Belle Epoque and experience the heyday of steam navigation on Lake Lucerne. But tourists, the nobility and leading politicians weren't – and still aren't – the only ones to be drawn by the beauties of the region. Over the years, personalities from the worlds of art and culture have chosen to make their home in this romantically situated region – or to come here on holiday. The writer Mark Twain, musicians Hans Huber, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Edwin Fischer and painter Hans Arp, co-founder of the Moderner Bund group of modernist artists, are internationally known examples.
Alongside the permanent collection on display, temporary exhibitions provide insights into regionally related issues.
