Mark Twain, the Tourism organisation's first advertising copywriter
"I believe that this place - Weggis - is the loveliest and most satisfying in the world. We have a little house on the hillside all to ourselves, and our meals are served to us there from the inn down on the lake shore" (letter from Mark Twain to his friend Henry H. Rogers). By the small house, Mark Twain meant the annex of the Schlössli Bühlegg guesthouse and the lakeside inn (now the Riva restaurant).
Mark Twain's favourite place quickly became clear: a bench under the oak tree on the small promontory, where the Mark Twain memorial stone can be found today between the Riva restaurant and its car park.
The memorial stone and a special Mark Twain oak near Bühlegg still commemorate his stay today. Since 17 January 1986, this special spot of land - exactly 153 square metres including the gnarled three-trunked oak - has belonged to the public. This place thus continues to bear witness to the famous American's stay.
